VSME, a European standard designed for SMEs

The VSME standard was developed by EFRAG at the request of the European Commission to enable SMEs to produce reliable ESG data that can be used by their stakeholders, within a simple, voluntary framework that is aligned with CSRD principles. It incorporates the structural principles of the European sustainable reporting framework derived from the CSRD ESRS, in a format that is proportionate and adapted to the operational capabilities of SMEs.

The VSME complies with the Omnibus Directive, which has postponed and simplified CSRD obligations for smaller companies, while reinforcing the importance of voluntary initiatives.

Volunteer

Designed for companies wishing to formalize their ESG approach without being obliged to do so, VSME offers a clear, voluntary approach tailored to their capabilities.

Universal

Initially designed for SMEs, VSME can be used by any organization not subject to CSRD, whatever its sector or size.

Harmonized

VSME offers a streamlined reference framework, based on a standard recognized by stakeholders, thus limiting the dispersion of non-harmonized ESG demands.

Consisting of two progressive modules

In order to reflect the diversity of ESG maturity levels among SMEs, the VSME framework is structured around two progressive modules, allowing each company to advance step by step in structuring its ESG strategy and disclosures.

The Basic Module

This module focuses on key environmental, social, and governance indicators to lay a solid foundation for your future reporting. It is particularly suited to SMEs that are just starting their ESG journey or want to respond to their first requests from customers or investors.

The Comprehensive Module

This module integrates policies, objectives, and transition plans, providing a comprehensive overview of your company's ESG performance and commitments. It meets the expectations of banks, investors, and major contractors, while preparing you for potential future alignment with the CSRD.
